THE CONTEXT
In 2016, I served as a UI/UX Designer at Ruangguru.com. At that time, the company was transitioning its focus from online tutor matchmaking to developing the 'Ruangguru App' – a comprehensive learning solution. Fresh off winning a Google Accelerator Launchpad award, the team began implementing Design Sprints to drive product development. My key contribution involved the creation of the new online consultation feature for the student application

THE
METHODS
We conducted in-depth interviews with 10 high school and elementary students, followed by a co-design workshop, and utilized card sorting to prioritize the information architecture.
THE CONCEPT
Insights from user interviews showed a recurring pain point: students often have questions during homework, but their private tutors aren't always present or immediately accessible. This unmet need presents a significant opportunity. What if we developed a service to address student questions precisely when and where they arise?"

We care about how student learn
The product is focused on the subject that need comprehensive understanding and explanation beyond the answer, but also the process. Such a subject including STEM and languange.
Early bird vs. Night Owl
We also taking consideration when the service can be accesed in reasonable time, as some student is prefer study in the dawn, and the other stay up late in the night
Accomodating both auditory and Visual learning
We believe that every kid’s have their own preference in a learning, therefore the product we accomondatel preference with chat, this become very handy for languange/literature subject, as everything is based on word. photo is included as some subject’s question might including complex graph, diagram, and image. This also make the user easier in explaining the question with just a snap.
As alternative, we provide audio call feature to help both party explain more about their problems in a more comfortable way. It also can be faster option than chat.
Implementation of design system
Our team proactively sought to implement a comprehensive design system standard within our app, drawing significant inspiration and guidance from Google Material Design for our Android development. setting a clear benchmark for consistency, usability, and maintainability across all our digital touchpoints.

THE IMPACT
Even amidst evolving product strategies, this feature demonstrated significant impact. Launched initially as 'Tanya Tutor' and later integrated into 'Ruang Les Online,' it rapidly scaled to serve over 22 million students and empower 300,000 teachers across Indonesia by 2020.

What’s exciting
Working with Visionaries
It's a rare and invaluable opportunity to work directly under a Chief Product Officer.
The experience offered unique insight into the C-level visionaries translate overarching product strategy into actionable, bite-sized features. It provided a front-row seat to strategic decomposition, shaping my understanding of top-bottom approach to product development.
Mastering Precision: Design Systems & Material Design
This experience marked my introduction to Google Material Design and the power of a structured design system. I’m learning to rigorously focused on ensuring every element, from naming conventions to component grouping, was meticulously precise. This instilled a deep appreciation for tidy, scalable design practices
Seamless Collaboration: Bridging Design and Development
Working side-by-side with the developer and software engineering teams was fundamental to our success. Utilizing tools like Zeplin ensured seamless hand-offs and communication, ensuring design intent was accurately translated into robust, functional products in agile way of working.

What I would do differently 😑️
Get the foundational right
Working as a subcontractor often meant adhering to prescribed directives, and if given the autonomy, I would have first engaged in a deeper strategic rethink. This would involve a holistic assessment of optimal feature placement, and a critical evaluation of whether the app's segmentation across student, teacher, and parent truly maximized user value.
Keep the hierarchy flat
I would also streamline certain Design Sprint exercises and foster an even flatter hierarchy in workshops, ensuring every team member felt truly empowered to voice their innovative ideas.
Always evolving
However, the most exhilarating aspect of a Series A startup is its relentless, dynamic evolution. Even when core business models and revenue generators pivot dramatically, there's immense satisfaction in seeing foundational features you designed continue to serve the company's evolving vision.
Today, with the advent of generative AI, the features I helped shape are evolving at an even more accelerated pace. This truly embodies the agile philosophy of "build first, launch, and iterate"
